What are Hands Free Foot Rests?

Hands Free Foot Rests are foot rests that can be adjusted in height without requiring the use of your hands.  In other words these are foot rests that do not require you to bend down and press a button, pull a lever, or reconfigure the rest in order to adjust the height of the foot platform (i.e. the platform where your feet rest).  Instead these type of foot rests can be adjusted with your foot, keeping your hands free and allowing you to not interrupt your activity when all you need is a simple adjustment of your foot rest.

What Type of Activities / Occupations Require or Benefit from Hands Free Foot Rests?

There are a variety of activities and occupations where people need a foot rest which needs to be height adjustable without the use of the hands.  These include:
  • People Who Perform Work at High Counters Such As
    • Bank Tellers
    • Lab Workers
    • Food Preparation (Sous Chefs, etc.)
  • People Who Use Drafting Stools and Prefer to Not "Hook" Their Legs Back to Use a Footring
  • Musicians - Especially Guitar Players

What are the Problems with Using Your Hands to Adjust Your Foot Rest?

Foot Rests in most cases are located on the floor, where they can get dirty and covered in not just dust, but grime and other particulate material from the floor (rotting / dried out food particles, hair, bacteria, etc.).  Even common items can pose an Occupational Health concern when reaching down to the floor level to adjust your foot rest with your hands (often under a desk or in a unlit area), such as oddly bent staples/paperclips, thin shards of plastic, and splinters of wood.  Your hands will potentially be exposed to these materials (or get cut, scratched or injured), and then you will bring them back up into your primary work area.  Just as you tell your children to not run their fingers along the underside of a 2x4 on a fence (as there could be nests, webbing, splinters, exposed rusted nails, etc., greater care has to be taken with your hands when reaching down to the floor as opposed to your desktop or countertop.
